PSYCHOLOGY TODAY
8.4
Summary
In this chapter you were asked to think about what psychology looks like today both as a science and as a profession.
You were asked to consider the diversity of areas that are researched and taught at many universities and other higher-education institutions and which are represented in the professional organizations in psychology.
Crucially, you were asked to reflect on the tension between the interests of scientists and practitioners - the so-called “science-practitioner gap” - and how these have been reflected in the development of the discipline and its professional organizations.
Finally, you were confronted with the recent realization of a replication crisis in psychology and the associated attempts to deal with this problem, including calls to more systematic programs of research and methodological changes associated with open science.
