Unpaid reproductive work: examples from Nepal
Unpaid and informal reproductive care work is challenging in many respects. It is also a challenge when developing labour market policies. This video introduces two examples from Nepal that show how this kind of work influences the way in which women participate in the labour market.
Roka Bal Kumari is a Nepali street vendor who describes a day in her life. Reproductive and unpaid care work is a major part of her day. Sangita Nepali is a domestic worker who shows how the absence of social protection affects the workforce. Christine Bigler points out that governments need to shift from informal to formal employment in order to develop a gender-equal and sustainable labour market.
What could be done to improve the working conditions of Roka Bal Kumar and Sangita Nepali. What would be your first priority? Write your thoughts down.
