After you’ve written your first draft, put the draft aside.

Then record yourself talking off the cuff about the same topic for ten or twenty seconds, as if you were explaining it to family and friends. Compare the recording with your written text. How different do the two sound? Rewrite your text to sound more like your spoken recording.
