LEARNING FROM DRUG DEVELOPMENT IN AFRICA

Drug development challenges in Africa
In this video, Professor Christian Burri describes the complex drug development process as well as the challenges of drug development specifically in Africa.
Drug development is a very complex and highly regulated process. Context plays a major role in this process. A few decades ago, the African continent lacked a minimum standard in terms of infrastructure, qualified staff, and ethics and regulations authorities.
In addition, clinical trial protocols were mainly developed in the Global North. These protocols were not adapted to the socio-cultural context of research settings in Africa.
This situation has now changed, with various African countries establishing centres of excellence in clinical research.
