'COORDINATION IN RHYTHM' – MODAL NOTATION

3.12

Wrap up chapter 3

Congratulations, with this step you reached the end of the third chapter!

In this chapter you had to solve a quite difficult task getting some basic information about the historical development of polyphony in Western music history and becoming acquainted with the modal notation of the 13th century. You learned more about the historical event of codifying time intervals in musical notation and how to transcribe modal notation into modern notation considering the two central compositional concepts of extensio modi and fractio modi.

In the next and last chapter we will focus on a historical shift in the evolution of musical notation and practice the technique of transcribing mensural notation. Transcribing mensural notation is not an easy task, so don’t give up too fast and follow your own pace when practicing.
