At the beginning of the 20th century, experimental psychology was largely the science of conscious mental experience - yet psychologists could not agree on what this meant. In the meanwhile, young psychologists were enticed by a new alternative that promised to establish psychology as a natural science based entirely on describing and predicting behavior.
