SURFACE READING & THE MATERIALITY OF COMMUNICATION
6.1
Is the medium the message?
Marshall McLuhan had a massive impact on the way we think about practically every aspect of cultural exchange. He turned our attention to the medial, material, and technological preconditions of all communication forms, including reading, and put forward the claim that the emergence of new media may radically alter both society and the human psyche.
In this video, Philipp Schweighauser assesses Marshall McLuhan’s claim that ‘the medium is the message’ and talks about his focus on the materiality of media.
